TfNSW Wombeyan Caves Rd
Upgrade of a 50 km section of Wombeyan Caves Road for Transport for NSW, improving safety and resilience through road widening, drainage renewal, installation of concrete culverts, and construction of multiple concrete causeways. Works were staged to maintain access and manage severe weather impacts.
Unicivil was commissioned by Transport for NSW to undertake a strategic upgrade of Wombeyan Caves Road, spanning approximately 40 kilometres. The scope focused on improving safety, accessibility, and drainage along a deteriorated, narrow corridor frequently used by residents, tourists, and service vehicles.
Key works delivered included:
Road widening to facilitate safer two-way travel across constrained segments
Replacement of failed culverts and installation of new drainage infrastructure to reduce erosion and flood risk
Construction of multiple concrete causeways to improve flood resilience and maintain access during high rainfall
Application of a new wearing course to strengthen pavement, extend service life, and enhance driver experience
Rock armouring and erosion controls to protect against subsidence and flooding.
Traffic staging and environmental management to maintain continuous access and minimise disruption.
Significant challenges were encountered due to erosion, subsidence, and remote access constraints. Unicivil applied detailed staging methodologies and maintained strong site controls to safely manage plant movements and coordinate materials delivery.
